ADULT SAILING PROGRAM
The Adult Sailing programs are designed to suit diverse skill levels. Our goal is to promote good seamanship and a love for the sport of sailing. GHYC offers private lessons 7-days a week for beginners and intermediates alike. GHYC racing members participate in the Saturday One Design Races .Racing lessons are available on Saturdays with instructors onboard Club-owned Rhodes 19's for the race. Private lessons are usually taught in Rhodes 19s but members can choose Lasers, Sunfish, 420s and Beetle Cats if they prefer.
Kayaks are also available for use 7 days-a-week
(five doubles and four singles).
4 Paddleboards are available to reserve for member use when they are not being used in the Junior Program. Private lessons are also available on Paddleboards. Reservations are for one-hour time blocks and there is a 15 minute no show cancellation policy.
There are loads of opportunities for boaters at all levels to participate in on-the-water activities. Choose from any of the options listed and enjoy our beautiful harbor this summer.
Registration
Online member registration for the 2012 Adult Summer Sailing Programs begins February 13, 2012, with the exception of Women's Sailing. Please read about our programs below, and then click here to register for Adult Sailing. Please download 2012 Adult Waiver Form and return a copy to cgrant@ghyc.com or fax to 508-325-0101.

2012 PROGRAMS
Shakedown Week
June 25 - 29, M-F 8:30 am - 12:00 pm
This class will be taught on Rhodes 19's for novice sailors and those who have taken lessons before but need a refresher. This "camp for adults" gives Members the opportunity to learn the basics of rigging and sailing a Rhodes 19 with the intention of becoming proficient enough to go sailing on their own. Sailors will rotate into every position on the boat, from helming, to main sail trim, to jib trim. Sailors will also learn how to leave and approach a mooring under sail.
Group Sailing Clinic
M,W,F 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
The 3 day clinic will be held every week and alternate the level of instruction from beginner one week to intermediate the next. Also NEW THIS YEAR are specialized Spinnaker Clinics for advanced sailors.
Beginner
weeks of July 9, 23 and August 6.
Instruction will cover rigging and de-rigging, basic boat handling, basic sailing concepts and mooring landing practice.
Intermediate Clinic
weeks of July 16, 30 and August 20
The clinic will cover fine-tune sail trim and an introduction to racing, navigation and seamanship. Rhodes 19's and Beetle Cats will be used in this clinic.
Spinnaker Clinic - NEW THIS YEAR
July 2, July 6 & August 9, 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Rhodes 19's - this half-day clinic is for advanced sailors who are already racing or are interested in racing Rhodes 19's. Sailors will practice spinnaker hoists, dowses and proper flying of the spinnaker in varying wind conditions.
Women's Sailing Clinic
Session A - 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm except Aug 14
Session B - 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm
Tuesdays July 3 - Aug 21 w/special all-island Women's Fun Sail August 14 during Race Week.
Women of all ages and skill levels are welcome to our most popular clinic. Sailors of varying skill levels are onboard Rhodes 19s with at least one experienced skipper per boat. Participants of both sessions are invited to enjoy a sun-downer back at the club at 6:30. Participants must choose between Session A or B and cannot register for both. The clinic provides an opportunity to get out on the water and go for a fun sail. Participants interested in a more intense sailing lesson should consider the new group lessons on MWF's or private lessons.
New Registration procedure for the Women's Sailng Clinic. There will be no advanced on line registration. The registration will be a weekly sign-up two weeks in advance of each clinic. Members can reserve a spot two weeks prior to the women's clinic of choice beginning at 9:30 am until 12:00 noon 14 days in advance. Reservations can be made at the front desk of the sailing center in person or by phone. Emails and texts are not accepted.
EXAMPLE: registration for the July 3 Women's Sailing Clinic will open on Tuesday June 19, 2012 and registration for the July 17 Women's Clinic will open on July 3.
Jobson Race Series
4:00 pm - 6:30 pm Every Thursday July 5 - Aug 23 (except Aug 16)
These informal races are a great way for GHYC members to get out on the water and brush up on their racing skills. They attract sailors at all levels, from racers practicing for the Saturday One Design Series to beginner racers/crew who have never raced before. We pair beginner racers/crew with experienced skippers to introduce newcomers to the world of racing. Sailors register as skipper (approved) or crew. This year approved skippers can register their team. This year the skippers meeting will be a half-hour earlier at 4:00 and will include a brief explanation/discussion of a racing rule, tactic or strategy.
Saturday Race Lesson
11:00 am - 4:00 pm Saturdays
If you've never raced before and would like to try or just need some back up skill, racing lessons provide valuable real-life racing experience in a controlled environment with a GHYC instructor onboard. GHYC Rhodes 19's and Beetle Cats are registered in the Saturday One-Design series and members can reserve a race lesson.
Safe Boating Course
Administered by the US Coast Guard Auxiliary
July 11 & 18, 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm.
Students will obtain a NASBLA Boating Certificate upon completion of the course (required in the state if MA for boaters under 16-years old). Course includes classroom and home study, plus written test.
Motor Boat Lessons
Available upon request. Daily 9:00 am -11:30 am or 12:30 pm - 3:00 pm.
Captain Services
There are five licensed captains on the GHYC staff that are available for private hire on member-owned boats, motor or sail. Weekly wash down services are also available through the dock attendants.
Race Management Clinic
August 6 & 8, 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm
Those sailors interested in volunteering for Race Committee responsibilities during Nantucket Race Week or for the July/August Sunday IOD series are encouraged to attend this clinic. The clinic will cover 5-minute starting sequence, signal flag protocol, recording finishes and mark boat responsibilities.
GHYC Family Cruises
Cruise to Tuckernuck - July 8, 10:30 am - 3:00 pm
Join the 3rd annual cruise for motor boaters. Boat owners are happy to bring other GHYC members on board their boat for a fun cruise to Tuckernuck. Boaters are encouraged to BYO lunch, beverages and snacks and "floaty" toys.
GHYC Cruise to Martha's Vineyard
July 22 (tentative), 10:30 am - 4:00 pm
Motor boats will rally together and cruise to MV for a group lunch and a walkabout in Edgartown. Boat owners are happy to bring other GHYC members on board their boat. Moorings in Edgartown are first come-first serve and the anchorage has launch service to the dock in Edgartown.
Mid-Day Madness
August 5, 10:30 am - 3:00 pm. Participant meeting at 10:30 am.
A mid-summer boating extravaganza! Cruise to the head of the harbor and have lunch on the beach in Wauwinet. GHYC members who have been approved for Open Sailing can reserve a Rhodes 19, Sunfish, Laser, or Beetle Cat, or they can bring their own boat. Sailboats and Motorboats are welcome. Boat owners are happy to bring other GHYC members on board their boats.
Around ACK Cruise
August 26, 10:30 am - 1:00 pm
Motor boats will rally together and cruise around the island of Nantucket. Boat owners are happy to bring other GHYC members on board their boat.

Saturday One Design Series
Saturdays in July and August
GHYC members can reserve a Rhodes 19 or Beetle Cat to race in the July and/or August One Design Series, held every Saturday throughout the season. Races are held for the following one-design classes: Beetle Cat, Indians, Marshall Cat, Rhodes 19 and Alerion.
Wednesday Night PHRF Races
Unlike the Thursday Jobson races, the PHRF Races are held outside the harbor and are island-wide for any boat with a PHRF Handicap Rating. Races run 5:00 pm - dark. You can register your sailboat for Wednesday Races online at nantucketcommunitysailing.org.
Wednesday IOD Clinic
If you are interested in sailing on an International One Design or just learning more about the syndicate fleet in Nantucket, sign up for the IOD Clinic held every Wednesday afternoon starting at 1:00 pm. Signup sheet is at the Nantucket Yacht Club front desk.
